Arena

At a finished Arena the hero can challenge one opponent at a time, free of charge. Walk up and press E (or click the Arena) to open its scroll. The tabs list every opponent on offer:

  • Monsters: every creature the hero has already met in the wild, including Elite and Weak variants, at its own level (see Creatures). A creature appears here once the hero has fought it outside the Arena.
  • Troops: every town unit type and the wild beasts, at level 1, 3 or 5.
  • Siege: every siege engine. Pick Attack or Defend and a wall level of 1–4 (palisade) or 5, 10, 15 or 20; Defend at level 10 is the default.
  • Naval: a Sailing Ship, Galley or Airship on the ocean, against the hero aboard his own lent vessel with a full crew. The enemy vessel carries a Swordsman and an Archer at the hero's level band.
  • Aerial: the Dragon Rider and the Airship, fought in the open field with the sky layer.

Monsters and troops are fought in the open field (with the sky layer for flyers). The hero's mount fights beside him.

Win or lose

A win gives normal battle XP and normal loot; companions who fought share the loot if the hero stayed out. A loss costs nothing: the hero is put back exactly as he was before the fight. Nothing is used up in any Arena fight, win or lose: ammunition, potions, scrolls, elixirs, bombs, wand and staff MP all come back. A win keeps its XP, loot and the hero's HP and conditions; personal MP stays spent.

The first Arena victory also gives the hero the Bestiary. Arena fights count toward its kill totals and toward taming, and town residents who visit the Arena draw new settlers (see Migration).
